Republic man marks 38th anniversary as plane crash survivor

Charlie Dietz regained consciousness to find himself at the bottom of a rushing river. He realized in that instant that he had survived a plane crash, he said. He pushed off the river bottom toward the surface in desperate need of air.

“I was thinking, 'I want to live,'” Dietz said, adding that he was gasping for breath as he broke the surface. Dietz and a teenager were the only two that survived the June 11, 1979 plane crash in Idaho that killed 10 other people.
